You know that adage, give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach him to fish, feed him for a lifetime? We must have heard of that a gazillion times, right?


The same applies to empowering women. You support one, you lift one, you lift a whole community of women. Because women rarely do something solo. When we get inspired, when we are given that hand to help us move on up, we turn back and lift the ones coming behind. Empower one, empower us all.


There are many ways to empower women. Being in the fitness industry, we want to shine a lot on empowering women through fitness. Women's empowerment via women's fitness? Really? How can we do it? Or, more to the point, how do we do it?


Transforming lives via fitness


More often than not, women are the default adults at home. The default parents, the ones bearing the maximum mental load of running a family. Whatever shape and size that family comes in, you better believe a woman is sitting in the engine room. steering the various family members in their daily lives. Quite often, in the course of their busy lives, they end up putting their health and fitness on the back burner, choosing to focus instead on childcare, work, and other needs of the family.


Thankfully, this tide is changing.


Over the past 13 years, we have been in operation, we have been so delighted to see more and more women choose strength training, to make a lifestyle change. Some come on their fitness journey to get a handle on their mental health. Some walk into The Quad, taking the very first step towards their weight-loss journey. Many come to us because for the first time in a long time, maybe for the first time in their whole life, they chose better health; they chose themselves.


How does the pursuit of fitness empower women?


  • It builds and boosts our confidence - Countless women who walk in through our doors prove this every single day. No matter their body type, by focusing on their own health and fitness goals, women build confidence. They start believing in themselves more and no longer suffer from low self-esteem.
  • Supportive environment - we see this every single day! Strong women help form a supportive community and in turn, encourage other women by having a positive impact on the women around them.
  • Boost mental health - working on physical fitness plays a crucial role in boosting the mental health of young women, and the not-so-young ones too. Pursuing an active lifestyle boosts a woman's cognitive health, along with cardiovascular health.

Success Story #1: How Sujatha Giri broke free of pain

Imagine being in chronic pain for almost a decade. This was Sujatha's life when she walked into The Quad. Her entire life was ruled by the pain in her back. She even had medication injected into her spine directly, just to help her get through the day. Despite her busy schedule, she decided to take an hour three evenings a week doing weight training. Her goal? Becoming pain-free. From day 1, that was her goal and her razor-sharp focus was completely on that.


How did she do it? By putting in the work. By showing up for herself day after day. By trusting her coach and her program. Even when she saw the rest of her class racking up their PRs, Sujatha never wavered from her focus. She needed to be the best version of herself and for that, she needed to kick her chronic pain back all the way.


Today, her winning attitude and never-say-die spirit are the stuff of Quad legend. By prioritizing herself and her health, Sujatha reached her goal. And continues to grow stronger every day.


Success Story #2: How strength training helped Vaishnavi take better care of herself and her growing baby

When women get pregnant, they are bombarded with advice from all sides. From simple changes to make to their lives to their eating habits, to limiting physical activity to even how many kilos of weight gain is permissible, women are put through a lot. Vaishnavi chose to ignore all that noise and put all her faith - and the health of her pregnant self - in our hands.


Like any other mother-to-be, Vaishnavi had her apprehensions. The last thing she wanted was to harm her growing baby. But she also knew that by pursuing a healthy lifestyle, she was setting her baby up for the best start in life. After extensive discussions with her coach, Head Coach Raj Ganpath, she settled down into the process. Her program was tailor-made to accommodate her growing body and help Vaishnavi enjoy the process while staying safe.


Every aspect of resistance training was tweaked to suit her growing body. From tempo squats to breathing exercises, her routine helped Vaishnavi hone her body to not only work on improving her stability but also help her during her labour.


The result? A pregnancy that was enjoyable as she listened to her body and reveled in its strength, even as she worked on growing her healthy baby.


Success Story #3: How consistency helped Subadra's energy levels go through the roof

Even amongst our fantastic community of fitness enthusiasts, Subadra stands apart. She is a superstar who showed breast cancer the door. And after socking it in the face, decided to take her health seriously and signed up with us. Her goals were simple: be regular and work on developing strength. And she did this by being unerringly consistent.


Day after day, week after week, Subadra put in the work. She trusted her exercise program and her coaches. And showed up for herself. It wasn't long before the fruits of her hard work became apparent. Her form, her strength, and her remarkable energy all spoke volumes of how well she was taking to her routine. And how well she was sticking to it! Apart from the obvious improvement in strength, the ability to remain calm and unflustered when a million things were happening around her is something that Subadra credits to her training. The fillip given to her mental strength is her favorite part of this whole enterprise!


These three fantastic women are just a small sampling of our amazing community of fitness buffs. While their circumstances and goals may vary, they all shared a few main points in common: they took small yet consistent steps; they trusted the process and listened to the expert advice; they leaned on their community for support; and they paid it forward by cheering the others that came behind them. 


Fitness is an amazingly effective tool for women's empowerment. It offers so much more than the improvement of physical strength. We have many more Sujathas, Subadras, and Vaishnavis in our midst. By sharing their journeys, we hope more women are inspired to embark on their fitness journeys and empower themselves and those around them.
